Chris Eubank Sr has revealed the one fighter he believes his son Chris Eubank Jr should be facing next.
The 58-year-old former world champion has stepped back from being an influence in the career of his son in recent years, although he still weighs in on some of the decisions that Chris Jr makes, including his choices of opponents.
Chris Jr has had a rollercoaster professional career, where he is yet to win a legitimate world championship. The 35-year-old from Brighton held the WBA ‘Interim’ world title at middleweight for several years, falling short in his only official world title challenge against George Groves in 2018.
Speaking on his own YouTube channel Call Chris Eubank, when asked what fight his son should be taking, Chris Sr urged him to pursue a rematch against Billy Joe Saunders, who handed Eubank Jr the first defeat of his tenure when they fought back in 2014.
“You lost to a fighter called Billy [Joe] Saunders, you shouldn’t have lost that fight. you lost it because you were disobedient to the plan that I gave you, you started fighting after the sixth round to prove to me that you can beat him at anytime. I expressly put down in solid words, you are not fighting Billy [Joe] Saunders, you are fighting the promoter and you will not beat the promoter. As they’d say you’d have to knock him out to get a draw, that’s the humour they use, that’s the influence of the promoters.
You should be fighting Billy Joe Saunders.”
He has been an outspoken critic of the Conor Benn fight and still believes it will not happen.
“There will be no fight night [against Conor Benn]. Like it didn’t happen the first time, I believe in the rules. I’ve said on my channel that the fight doesn’t happen, what more is there to say. My words will age well, as you’ll see.”
Eubank Jr is due to face fierce rival Conor Benn in their rescheduled bout on April 26 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Their initial clash, which was due to take place in October 2022, had to be postponed after Benn tested positive for a banned substance in the lead-up.
Their hihgly anticipated showdown will reignite a feud between both families which dates back over 40-years, after Chris Sr and Nigel Benn shared the ring twice during the early 90’s.
