Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez has tasted defeat just twice in 66 fights.

The Mexican superstar, who is yet to be knocked down in a near two-decade professional career, first fell short against Floyd Mayweather back in 2013 and then again in 2022 when he moved up to light-heavyweight for a second time only to be beaten by Dmitry Bivol.

Since then Alvarez is on a run of five straight points victories and has looked comfortable in each. They came against Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia and, most recently, Edgar Berlanga.

With a second fight against Bivol now likely off the table due to the Russian’s recent loss to Artur Beterbiev and talk of an immediate rematch, there are two standout opponents for Canelo. One is David Benavidez, who recently moved up to light-heavy himself after unsuccessfully chasing Canelo at super-middle for some time.

The other is Terence Crawford. Like Canelo, ‘Bud’ is a four-division champion. He now wants to move up two more weight classes for the challenge. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, multi-weight champ Claressa Shields said Crawford is the only fighter who can beat Canelo today.

“David [Benavidez] is a different type of animal, it’s a fight I wanna see. But I still think the only man that can beat Canelo is Terence Crawford. That’s just what I think and I want to see it.”

Although initially dismissive of the match-up, Alvarez has always said he will entertain any offers. He may just have to give it some serious thought now that potential opponents are dwindling.
