Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is fast becoming the main man in the welterweight division.
Last year, fans finally got to see who the best 147lbs fighter on the planet was when Terence Crawford faced off against Errol Spence Jr for the undisputed championship. Although pre-fight the contest was billed as a 50/50 showdown, ‘Bud’ dominated from the opening bell and secured a ninth round stoppage victory having put Spence down on the canvas three times.
With both men moving up to 154 a void was created at welterweight which Ennis was quick to fill.
The Philadelphia native, who is the current IBF champion, carries serious power in both hands, boasts an incredible record of 29 knockouts from his 32 victories and is yet to taste defeat.
Crawford became a four-weight world champion last weekend after defeating WBA belt holder Israil Madrimov on his debut at super-welterweight. With a potential Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez clash now seemingly dead in the water a clash against ‘Boot’s is starting to look like the biggest fight for ‘Bud’.
David Avanesyan is the only fighter to have shared the ring with both men and told his trainer Carl Greaves via Boxing Scene that Crawford was the heavier hitter and expected the 36-year-old to come out on top if they were to meet.
“I was talking to David and he said that Crawford hits harder but that ‘Boots’ Ennis was a bit sharper and busier.
In a nutshell – and after speaking to David – he thinks Crawford beats ‘Boots’ Ennis.”
Ennis stopped Avanesyan in the fifth round in his last outing, one round earlier than Crawford managed two years ago,
