Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford has had his say on the controversy surrounding Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach.
‘Tank’ Davis retained his WBA lightweight title earlier this month when he fought to a majority decision draw against Roach, who put on an impressive display in a thrilling 12-round contest against the unbeaten star.
Things could have been very different for Roach however, after Davis sensationally took a knee in the ninth round of the contest, although referee Steve Willis did not rule this as an official knockdown. A 10-8 round in favour of ‘The Reaper’ could have impacted the scorecards dramatically, potentially leading to the 29-year-old being declared the new champion.
In the immediate aftermath of the bout, many prominent figures in the sport have had their say on the events that unfolded, including four-division world champion and pound-for-pound star Crawford.
Speaking on The Big Podcast with Shaq, the 37-year-old from Omaha revealed what he believed the result should have been, as he admits he thought Roach had done enough even without the knockdown.
“My honest opinion I thought Roach won without the knockdown. I thought it was a close fight and both of them fought a good technical fight.
They were countering each other and were familiar with each other, but I thought Roach was the busier man and the sturdier man and I thought he landed more shots than Tank.
I thought Tank won the middle rounds. The earlier rounds Roach was winning slightly by inactivity on both parts. Roach landed a couple more shots than Tank, then the last couple rounds I thought Roach showed he wanted it more than Tank.”
A rematch between ‘Tank’ and Roach is expected to take place at some stage this summer, with reports suggesting that both fighters are keen on facing each other once again and settling the score.
