Pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford has spoken out after Devin Haney become a world champion in a third weight class.
Haney defeated countryman Brian Norman Jr to capture the WBO world welterweight title at the ANB Arena in Riyadh on Saturday night, his first title triumph since he held the WBC super-lightweight title, having also previously been undisputed lightweight world champion.
He floored Norman in the second round of their Saudi Arabia clash before going on to get the nod on all three of the judges scorecards, which read 114-113, 116-111 and 117-110 all in favour of ‘The Dream’.
There had been concerns prior to the bout that the punching power of Norman would be too much for Haney and that he would ultimately suffer the first defeat of his professional career at the hands of the Georgia-native.
One man that has shared his thoughts on Haney defying the odds and dethroning Norman is pound-for-pound superstar ‘Bud’ Crawford.
Crawford knows himself what it is like to become world champion in multiple divisions, having become a five-weight world champion and a three-weight undisputed champion in his own illustrious career.
Speaking on social media just moments after Haney was declared the winner, Crawford paid his respects to ‘The Dream’ who he says ‘shut a lot of people up’ following his victory over the hard-hitting former champion.
“All that sh*t yall was talking about @Realdevinhaney and he went out there and shut a lot of people up once again.”
It will be a night to remember for Haney and his team after what has been a frustrating 18 months for the unbeaten American, who will undoubtedly be targeting the biggest fights possible at 147lbs.
