Pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford has weighed in on the potential showdown between Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson.
The lightweight superstars have been on a collision course for a number of years now, although any concrete news of a fight between the pair is yet to intensify for various reasons.
Both men are reigning world lightweight title holders, with ‘Tank’ Davis holding the WBA crown and Stevenson reigning as the WBC champion. ‘Tank’ is set to return to the ring on March 1 against Lamont Roach Jr in New York City, as Stevenson prepares to make the next defence of his crown against late replacement Josh Padley this weekend in Riyadh.
Speaking on the Cigar Talk Podcast, ‘Bud’ Crawford made no mistake in backing his friend and occasional training partner Stevenson to get the job done against his lightweight rival ‘Tank’ Davis, though he said there was no bias.
“I got Shakur. Like I said, I respect Tank. In boxing, he’s one of the ones. We gonna take his personality and personal things out of it. Boxing, he’s definitely talented, he’s definitely respected in boxing but Shakur’s a different fighter, Shakur’s different you know.
“People may call him boring, people may say he can’t punch, but they said the same thing about Floyd because they’re defensive fighters. Tank is not gonna be able to hit Shakur like he hit everybody else, and he know that.”
With boxing currently in the best position it has arguably ever been in terms of match-ups being made, a showdown between Davis and Stevenson could be closer to happening than ever.
Although, one spanner in the works is ‘Tank’s shock retirement announcement, claiming he will hang up the gloves by the end of this year and perhaps halting any hope of an exciting clash of styles against Stevenson.
