Terence Crawford believes Gervonta Davis should have suffered a defeat in his career.
Davis came extremely close to being dethroned of his WBA world lightweight title by Lamont Roach when they locked horns at the Barclays Center in New York on March 1.
The fight was declared a split decision draw after a competitive 12-round contest, which could have gone in favour of ‘The Reaper’ who put on the performance of a lifetime against ‘Tank.’
Roach forced Davis to take a knee during round nine, however referee Steve Willis failed to rule this as an official knockdown.
Had this round been scored a 10-8 in favour of Roach, it would have meant that the 29-year-old from Washington would have become the first fighter to defeat ‘Tank’ as well as the newly crowned WBA lightweight champion.
Speaking to Club Shay Shay, pound-for-pound star ‘Bud’ Crawford gave an honest assessment on the bizarre situation which unfolded during the ninth round of Davis’ showdown with Roach.
“I’m just as confused as you, I said ‘Huh?’, I was just like ‘Ahh that’s crazy’. And Steve Willis is a great referee, and he started counting then stopped.”
Crawford was then asked if he believes ‘Tank’ should have been declared the winner.
“No, I don’t think he won without the knockdown you know, it was a close fight but I would have gave the edge to Roach, he fought a great fight. Gervonta fought a great fight as well but I just think he was overconfident, I don’t think he took Roach serious.”
An announcement on the highly anticipated showdown between ‘Tank’ and Roach is expected to be made in the upcoming weeks, although the unbeaten WBA lightweight champion is still being linked with a sensational bout against YouTube sensation Jake Paul, which could happen before the end of the year.
