Dave Allen has given his honest take on the showdown between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury that is likely to take place in November.
This contest is long overdue. Both former two-time world heavyweight champions are long past their best and fast approaching forty years of age.
Over the years, they have both been involved in plenty of epic fights with the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, who they have each beaten, as well as Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr, while they both lost consecutive fights to Oleksandr Usyk, who left them without any world titles.
Now they are set to fight for bragging rights and legacy as both near the end of their careers. Joshua has fought just once this year, and he was put down in the first round twice by his unfenced opponent, Kristan Prenga, while Fury has beaten Arslanbek Makmudov and Mariusz Wach.
Speaking to talkSPORT Boxing, Allen said the shine has very much been taken off the fight for him.
“You know what, I don’t care about the fight at all. I’ve gone way past caring now. I’m sick of talking about it and hearing about it. When they get in the ring, I’ll be excited. When they’re opposite each other, Buffer’s doing the introduction, I’ll get excited again.
“One, it should have happened six or seven years ago, two it might be going to America. Three, Joshua got put over a couple of times last time; Fury didn’t look great. I’m not really bothered any more; I’d much rather watch Itauma and Dubois. It’s a much better boxing contest.
“Joshua-Fury is not even about who’s the best heavyweight in Britain any more; it’s about who’s better out of the two. Realistically, as a boxing man, I don’t care.”
The final hurdle ahead of the first bell is the location, with promoter Eddie Hearn and Joshua pushing for it to be in the UK, while broadcasters are hoping to host it in New York for a global TV audience.
