David Benavidez has claimed the champion he has been chasing for years, Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez, really isn’t that good.
Canelo is one of boxing’s superstars and currently holds all four belts in the 168 ranks. Benavidez, having been a two-time champion in that division already, wants a shot at the undisputed title.
He has so far been unsuccessful, with Alvarez demanding an offer of $200 million to consider the fight despite Benavidez being his mandatory challenger with the WBC. Through frustration, the feud is now beginning to turn sour.
On the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Benavidez brought up the undisputed champion’s passed failed doping test for Clenbuterol, claiming it was around then that he logged the best performance of his career.
“Well look at this. I’m gonna throw another thing at you guys. When the greatest Canelo came out – the one that fought Triple G the first time – dude popped dirty for Clenbuterol bro. Why do you think the second fight didn’t happen? For me, that was the best Canelo I’ve ever seen, but that Canelo off of steroids.
Everybody else that he’s fought. Amir Khan, Daniel Jacobs, what the f**k is his name, Billy Joe Saunders, Caleb Plant, these guys are all weak bro. So that’s why I see Canelo Alvarez and I think he’s not as good as everybody thinks. Because the best one was off Clenbuterol. That’s why he looked so good.”
Canelo tested positive following the controversial draw in the first Gennady Golovkin bout. He accepted a six-month backdated ban on the explanation that he ate tainted meat in his home country and the rematch was rescheduled.
Benavidez does not buy the scenario.
“He said that he ate meat that was tainted in Mexico. I’ve talked to people. They say that for him to test positive off a piece of meat he would’ve had to eat the whole cow.”
The 27-year-old is taking a break from chasing a fight against Canelo to step up to light-heavyweight this weekend, where he will fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Interim title.
