Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez has signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season that will include a blockbuster clash with Terence Crawford this September.
The elite Mexican will fight in May before accepting the challenge of ‘Bud’ Crawford, who has been calling for it for some years despite having to move up two weight classes for the pleasure.
That leaves three opponents left in the deal, and one fans certainly will want to see is David Benavidez. The former two-time super-middleweight world titlist left the 168 pounds ranks after failing to land a shot at unified champ Canelo, moving to light-heavyweight and this month scoring a career-best victory over David Morrell.
Canelo has fought at light-heavyweight twice before and could make the move up once again. That is what Benavidez wants, who took to Instagram in the wake of his rival’s new business move to call for the fight to finally happen.
“Imagine if Canelo would just agree and fight me already. It’s not about the money, it’s about what the sport needs right now and we owe it to the fans. Without a doubt it would go down as the best Mexican shootout in boxing history. Let’s give the fans what they deserve!!! We 300 percent confident on this side but I can’t say the same for the other side.”
Canelo is likely to take on a lesser name this May in preparation for the Crawford fight. Meanwhile, Benavidez kept his WBC Interim Light-Heavyweight belt with his win over Morrell and added the WBA Regular strap. He is therefore in pole position for a shot at the winner of the undisputed rematch between champion Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol later this month.
