David Benavidez Announces Huge Light Heavyweight Fight Against David Morrell: “One For The Fans”

David Benavidez continues to prove that he is willing to face the toughest challenges in the sport of boxing.

After chasing a fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for some time at super-middleweight, the undefeated two-time champion opted instead to move up to light-heavy.

He won his first bout against Oleksandr Gvozdyk via unanimous decision and, with that, became WBC Interim Champion, thus first in line for a shot at the winner of this weekend’s undisputed contest between Artur Beterbiev against Dmitry Bivol.

Not content to sit on the sidelines and wait it out, the 27-year-old has instead booked an edge-of-your-seat fight with David Morrell, another man who has recently moved up to the division.

Taking to social media, Benavidez announced the deal.

“There was a lot of names on the table but I wanted to give my fans the best fight possible. I reached out to David Morrell and his team to make this happen and we got the contract done. This fight really gonna be a banger!!! Two of the best in the division and two titles on the line, Let’s f***ing go! Date & Location to be announced shortly.”

Like Benavidez, Morrell is undefeated. The Cuban has nine knockouts from 11 wins and won his maiden 175 bout against Radivoje Kalajdzic in August.

The fight will likely take place in early 2025 and has been rumoured to be a co-headline with Sebastian Fundora, who has been in talks to face either Terence Crawford or Erroll Spence Jr. It will be a PBC promotion and be shown on Amazon Prime.
