David Morrell has opened the door to a showdown with an unbeaten prospect after his clash with Callum Smith fell through.
Former WBA ‘Regular’ light-heavyweight champion Morrell had been originally planned to face Smith at the M&S Bank Arena in the latter’s hometown of Liverpool on Saturday April 18.
The bout itself was set to be contested for the WBO ‘Interim’ world light-heavyweight title, with the winner likely to be ordered to challenge Dmitry Bivol for his unified world titles at 175lbs next.
Whilst Morrell had been hopeful of remaining on the show in Liverpool, it was revealed on Monday that the main event had been scrapped and would be replaced with a 10-round clash between Ben Whittaker and Argentina’s Braian Suarez.
Speaking on social media, Morrell urged Whittaker to step-up and ‘give the fans what they want’ rather than going ahead with his showdown with Suarez.
“Dímelo @benwhittaker I’m ready to fight April 18th. How are you older than me and still a prospect? Let’s give the fans the fight they want to see!”
Whittaker was last in action back in November when he produced a devastating 1st round knockout victory over Germany’s Benjamin Gavazi at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, England.
The Olympic Silver medallist signed for Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing towards the end of last year and will be keen on establishing himself as a serious contender at 175lbs over the next 18 months.
The more likely scenario for Morrell is that the fight with Smith is rescheduled, with fans hoping it could take place later this year.
