Liverpool heavyweight David Price, a former British and Commonwealth champion, plus Olympic bronze medallist. enjoyed a relatively busy 12 months from the end of 2018. An impressive and rejuvenating three-fight win streak at domestic level culminated in a schooling of in-form Dave Allen last July and Price was, against all odds, a man with options once more.

Dereck Chisora was also enjoying an Indian Summer and while that constituted a tough match for Price, when it was put to him for a big PPV show, with commensurate PPV money, the likeable giant held out for what he wanted and took the challenge, albeit at short notice. David fought typically bravely but was stopped in the fourth round.

"I felt at the time when I was negotiating the fight, I knew I was gonna have to take it, but I was f*cking pissed off because I felt like I deserved a fight like that with a full training camp," Price pointed out (full audio below). "I was reluctant in taking it, but I took it and I don’t regret it. I had to take it and it fell at the right time because not long after, this [the Covid-19 pandemic] has happened and I’d have gone God-knows how long without a fight.

"I was talking a lot about momentum at the time and by fighting regular, momentum was building. I had three domestic-level fights then Chisora’s fringe world level. It turned out to be quite a good stage in my career."

Price is not asserting he’d have beaten Chisora with a full camp, far from it, but does believe it would have increased his chances.

"More legs, using my jab and having the confidence that I could use my legs," Price highlighted as things that would have been different. "I think if I’d been able to stick to boxing long and frustrating him, it would have been more in my favour. That being said, Dereck Chisora’s always gonna be a really hard night for me, style-wise, full camp or not. I’d like to have been in more of a position to say ’No excuses.’ But Dereck’s flying as well and I think he’s improved a hell of a lot.
"It was a joint main event on pay per view, they needed me at short notice so we were in a strong position, negotiating-wise. It was a roll of the dice and I had to go for it."
