Gervonta Davis has been accused of avoiding a showdown with an unbeaten lightweight contender.
The 30-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland is over 30 fights into his professional career, remaining unbeaten since he made his debut back in 2013.
Davis has already won world titles across three weight classes and currently reigns as the WBA world lightweight champion, having made a handful of successful defences during his reign.
His most recent outing came against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1, fighting to a majority decision draw against his countryman after a controversial showdown at the Barclays Center in New York City.
As he prepares for his highly anticipated rematch with Roach, which is due to take place on August 16, Davis has been accused of avoiding a bout against unbeaten lightweight contender Floyd Schofield.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Schofield’s father and coach Floyd Sr claimed that he believes his son would stop ‘Tank’ should they fight, but that the 30-year-old will retire before facing the unbeaten contender.
“Floyd will stop Tank, that’s why they won’t choose us. that’s why they’re retiring. Floyd will stop Tank, we already know it, we watched Tank get stopped plenty of times in camp. He’s not new, he’s not invincible.”
Schofield returned to the ring last Saturday night as he stopped former IBF world super-featherweight champion Tevin Farmer in the opening round of their bout at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
The 22-year-old from New Jersey had been scheduled to challenge WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson earlier this year, but was forced to pull out of the fight with illness just days before.
