Gervonta Davis ‘Heartbroken’ Over Downfall Of One Four Weight Champion: “He Could Be The Greatest”

Gervonta Davis is viewed as one of the most exciting current world champions in the sport of boxing.

‘Tank’ is the reigning WBA lightweight champion and holds an undefeated record of 30-0, with an impressive 28 of those wins coming by knockout.

He returns to action on Saturday when he makes the second defence of his belt against Lamont Roach at the Barclays Center in New York.

Davis has already become a three-division world champion, having also held honours at super-featherweight and super-lightweight, and if he continues to perform at the highest level, could go down as one of the best of this current era.

There is another man that Davis feels could have been one of the best though, telling Sommer Hill that former world champion Adrien Broner’s fall off left him heartbroken.

“It’s heartbreaking to see someone like Adrien [Broner]. Someone that had the potential to be one of the greatest fighters ever, and he didn’t reach his full potential. I seen him at his peak, so it’s like damn.”

Broner was a four-weight world champion from super-featherweight up to welterweight, and was the second youngest boxer to ever accomplish that feat when he did so at the age of 26, with only Oscar De La Hoya managing to do so at a younger age of 24.

A string of issues both inside and outside the ring saw Broner’s career begin to unravel though, suffering defeats to the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia.

Broner’s career has slowed down in recent years, fighting on just three occasions since January 2019, claiming two victories over unheralded opponents before a unanimous decision loss to Blair Cobbs in June 2024.

Davis will be hoping that his career doesn’t go the same way and he remains undefeated, but pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford has named two fighters that he believes will defeat ‘Tank.’
