A former sparring partner of Gervonta Davis has confidently assessed the lightweight champion’s chances of knocking out an opponent as big as Jake Paul.
The 30-year-old from Baltimore was originally pencilled in to face fellow countryman Lamont Roach Jr in a rematch after their controversial first encounter back in March ended in a majority draw, but these plans have now been squandered.
Some fans believe the size of Paul could prove to be too much in the bout against Davis, but a sparring partner of ‘Tank’ has offered insight which may alter those thoughts.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Davis’ gym-mate shared details of how the unbeaten lightweight once reportedly knocked out a heavyweight in a sparring session, hinting that ‘Tank’ is more than capable of repeating this feat when he clashes with Paul later this year.
“Man I was about to spar Tank, he was sparring this big boy, a heavyweight boy, and Tank hit him so hard he was on the ropes like this (hanging), I thought he died. I was like, ‘Man, I hope you don’t do this s*** to me.'”
Davis is known for his thunderous punching power which has played a key role in him knocking out 28 of the 30 opponents that he has beaten throughout the course of his professional career to date.
Aside from Roach, the only two other men to withstand the power of Davis and go the distance with him are former WBA super-lightweight champion Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz and durable Mexican German Meraz, who Davis faced in just the ninth bout of his professional career in October of 2014.
