Gervonta Davis has spoken for the first time since his fight with Jake Paul was announced.
‘Tank’ is set for a shock showdown with YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday 14 November, with the event broadcast live on Netflix.
Davis was last in action in March when his WBA lightweight title defence against Lamont Roach at the Barclays Center in New York ended in a controversial majority decision draw, with it expected that an immediate rematch would come next.
It hasn’t materialised though, with ‘Tank’ instead turning his attention to Paul, in a bout that is yet to be determined whether it will be an exhibition or professional contest, or what the weight class will be for the fight.
Davis has received a lot of criticism for his decision to face Paul rather than fulfil his rematch with Roach, but he has posted on social media to defend his actions and make his motivation clear: “I grab money, I’m out.”
“It’s no “lose”. I grab money, I’m out.”
Whether or not boxing fans like it, Paul has undoubtedly become one of the biggest names in the sport over the past few years, thanks mainly to his controversial fight with Mike Tyson in November, which ended with ‘The Problem Child’ claiming a unanimous decision victory over the then 58-year-old.
Last time out, Paul defeated former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision in a cruiserweight bout, and now turns his attention to Davis, with Ryan Garcia already making his prediction for the fight involving his former foe.
