Gervonta Davis could be in danger of losing his WBA lightweight title.

Davis was last in action on Saturday when he put his belt on the line against Lamont Roach, in a fight that many fans expected ‘Tank’ to win with ease.

It didn’t transpire that way though, as Davis was pushed all the way by Roach, in a fight that was surrounded in controversy due to the actions of ‘Tank’ in the ninth round.

He voluntarily chose to take a knee, later revealing it was due to grease in his eyes that had dripped from his hair, but the referee opted not to give him a count.

It proved to be costly for Roach, as the fight ended with a majority draw verdict, but he would have won had the ninth been scored a 10-8 round in his favour.

Davis initially stated in his post-fight interview that he would be willing to face Roach again, but said clearly in the post-fight press conference that the rematch would not be next.

‘Tank’ may have to change his mind or risk being stripped of his title, after it was revealed by Ring Magazine that WBA president Gilberto Mendoza is likely to order an immediate rematch.

“I think it’s going to be no doubt about having a rematch on this. … I think this supersedes the public perception of boxing involved here with a huge star for the sport and we need to send a strong message out there. … It was a very controversial night.”

If Davis does take the rematch with Roach next, it would delay potential unification fights with WBC champion Shakur Stevenson or the WBO’s Keyshawn Davis.
