Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach Rematch Falls Apart As Shakur Stevenson Agrees To Fight: “We’ll Do It”

It appears that a decision has been made on the much anticipated rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach.

The lightweight stars clashed for the first time at the Barclays Center in New York City on March 1, with ‘Tank’ Davis putting his WBA 135lb world title up for grabs against his fellow countryman.

After a closely fought 12-round contest, the fight was declared a majority decision draw, although many viewers felt Roach had done more than enough to be declared the winner and hand Davis the first defeat of his career.

The main talking point of the bout came during the ninth round when ‘Tank’ took a knee to the canvas after being on the receiving end of a Roach jab, but referee Steve Willis failed to rule this as an official knockdown, effectively squandering Roach’s chances of being declared the new champion.

In an interview with Boxing Scene, Roach issued an update on the potential rematch with Davis, as he admits he is ‘moving on’ after still being left waiting for movement from his former rival’s team.

“Well first off, the rematch don’t look like it’s happening. That’s just to put it out there and be transparent with everyone because that’s the only question I get 10 times a day, maybe even more. That’s what it is and that’s what it’s looking like, again, we haven’t heard from [Davis’] camp specifically when it comes to the business. It is what it is, as far as my future, we are moving on.

Whilst it looks as though he is missing out on the chance to become a two-time world champion against Davis, Roach could go on to face another unbeaten American world champion in Shakur Stevenson and revealed the pair had already spoken about the fight and agreed to make it happen at some point – ‘we’ll do it for sure.’

“I think apart from the rematch [with Davis] the best fight for me and the best fight for the division is me versus Shakur Stevenson. And to be pretty honest, [Stevenson] said he would take the fight between me and him. We talk, and we definitely sat down and said, ‘We’ll do it, for sure’. He’s a competitor and he wants to show that he’s the best. He really doesn’t have any picks, like me, like for real, we will fight each other.”
