Oscar De La Hoya has shared his final verdict on the upcoming ‘super-fight’ between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
The Mexican icon began his second reign as the undisputed champion at 168lbs earlier this year when he defeated Cuba’s former IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
As for Crawford, the 37-year-old from Omaha last fought when he defeated WBA world champion Israil Madrimov in August 2024, although he is now set to make the jump up in two whole weight classes ahead of his showdown with Canelo this Saturday.
One man who knows Alvarez well is legendary fighter-turned-promoter De La Hoya, who promoted the Mexican superstar for a number of years under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, before a bitter fallout between the two.
Speaking to Fight Hype, De La Hoya sensationally claimed that the upcoming clash between Canelo and Crawford is ‘laughable’ as he seemingly backs the Mexican superstar to defeat ‘Bud’ this weekend.
“Now what the media is reporting and it’s circulating is that Canelo vs. Crawford is the biggest fight of the decade. I mean to a purist and a fighter, it’s laughable because you have Crawford jumping up two weight classes to fight Canelo who’s a natural light-heavyweight? Crawford who couldn’t push back Madrimov? Life and death with Madrimov. What do you think Canelo is going to do to him? Run him out of the ring!”
Many fans and analysts have expressed their concerns at Crawford making such a significant jump in weight to face Canelo, especially considering the 35-year-old from Guadalajara has campaigned at 168lbs since making the move up from middleweight back in 2018.
Alvarez has raced up a number of impressive defeats since he made his super-middleweight debut against Rocky Fielding, defeating the likes of Callum Smith, Jaime Munguia and Gennady Golovkin along the way.
