Mike Tyson has assured fans that he has what it takes to beat novice boxer Jake Paul this weekend in Arlington, Texas.
Many are not convinced given the former undisputed heavyweight champion who retired in 2005 is closing in on 60 whilst Paul, who has had 11 fights of varying levels of the last four years, is not yet 30.
The controversial bout will take place over eight two-minute rounds. Speaking to The Stomping Ground, Hall of Fame fighter turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya had little doubt that boxing novice Paul can stop Tyson.
“Jake Paul is a young, strong fighter who is now becoming dangerous. Who is becoming experienced in the sport. One punch from Jake Paul well-landed can easily knock out Mike Tyson. We have to be honest with ourselves. I just wish that everyone comes out healthy, especially with Tyson being 60-years-old, but I think it’s gonna be entertaining. The masses will be watching across the world and I think it’s a positive thing.”
Having said that, he also gives ‘Iron’ Mike a strong chance at the win in the first six minutes of the bout, saying that if he connects properly it means one thing for the former Disney Channel star – sayonara.
“Given the face it’s two minutes, 14 ounce gloves, he has three rounds to take care of business. After three rounds that gas tank starts lowering, he starts to fade away at his age. It’s gonna be very difficult for him if it goes past four rounds, but I think if Tyson lands the right punch in the first three rounds it could be sayonara for Jake Paul. I give it to Jake Paul if it goes past four rounds.”
Many in the sport feel that there will be a gentleman’s agreement that the fight could go the distance, swaying it more towards a competitive exhibition despite the advertised soft pro rules. Others hope that will be the case through fear for ‘Iron’ Mike.
