Mike Tyson‘s return to the ring against Jake Paul, as predicted by many, did not deliver.
The former undisputed champion – and once the youngest ever titlist in the division – stepped back through the ropes at 58 to fight Paul, 27, over eight two minute rounds.
Tyson looked a shadow of his former self, becoming largely becoming redundant in the contest after the first few minutes. Paul coasted and, to his credit, seemed to let up on his shots to avoid a grim stoppage. The YouTuber-turned-fighter won by unanimous decision and boxing icon Tyson, fans hope, will have now be retired for good.
Even despite ‘Iron’ Mike coming out of the ring unscathed, the main event left a sour taste in the mouth for many. Speaking to iFL TV, Hall of Fame fighter turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya summed up his feelings on the main event in one word.
“Disgusted”
The six-weight world champion elaborated.
“I actually stayed up to watch it, I actually did, and I felt whilst watching it, I felt disgusted. Disgusted at Jake Paul for putting this together knowing that Tyson was 58-years-old.
I’m a fighter myself and I once tried coming back at 48 years old and my body just shut down, so when you’re going to fight a 28-year-old like Jake Paul against Tyson who is a legend, he’s a national treasure, a world treasure, I felt a little disgusted. I felt bad for Tyson but you know what, I’m proud of him.”
Paul will move ahead with a professional record of 11-1. He has been offered a title shot by feared knockout artist Artur Beterbiev.
