Oscar De La Hoya once promoted Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez but now spends more time arguing with him through the media.

‘The Golden Boy’ helped Canelo establish his name in the USA earlier in his career but by 2020 they had such a falling out that court action ensued.

Since then there have been plenty of barbed exchanges about loyalty and De la Hoya has often taken issue with Canelo’s choice of opponents while also claiming he is in decline.

Speaking to Fight Hype, the former multi-weight champion and Hall of Famer was asked who would have won between him and ‘Canelo’ at 154. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t hesitate to answer and said his jab and footwork would have been too good.

“Easy, hands down. Easy, come on. Nobody could have stopped this jab. Nobody could have ever stopped this jab. In my prime, my footwork was impeccable, it would have lost him. When you have heavy legs and heavy feet, you’re walking on quicksand, a fighter like me, I probably would have had Floyd Snr train me, it would have been probably a walk in the park.”

Canelo is the current unified super middleweight world champion having recently been stripped of one of his belts. He will defend the titles in September when he takes on Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga, who is unbeaten in 22 fights with 17 knockouts.

Last time out, the Mexican got one over on De La Hoya by beating his young and hopeful challenger Jaime Munguia with a relatively straightforward 12-round points victory which included a knockdown of Munguia.
