Mexican great Canelo Alvarez finds himself at a crossroads in his career after suffering a defeat to Terence Crawford earlier this month.
The 35-year-old from Guadalajara was comprehensively beaten by ‘Bud’ in their historic showdown at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on September 13, surrendering his undisputed super-middleweight world championship in the process.
The three judges at ringside scored the bout 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 all in favour of the American superstar, although it has been argued by fans and experts that the scorecards should have actually been a lot wider.
Legendary fighter-turned-promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who has been one of Canelo’s harshest critics over the last few years, has now shared his view on the fighter that he promoted for a large portion of his professional career up until their split five years ago.
Speaking to Fight Hype, De La Hoya was asked if he believes the Mexican icon is ‘shot and done’ after suffering the third defeat of his career to ‘Bud’ Crawford.
“Don’t get me wrong, Canelo facing the right opponent that’s going to stay in front of him, that’s going to fight, that’s going to make it a brawl, Canelo knocks him out, so I’m not saying he’s shot or done, it’s far from it.
It’s all on the matchmaking, it’s all on who you put in front of him, it’s all about squeezing those last dollars from the fans.”
Whilst it appears that Canelo is set to fight on and continue with his career, it remains to be seen whether he will face Crawford in a rematch next.
The Mexican great has already been reinstated as the number one super-middleweight contender with the WBC, meaning he could actually fight for the vacant belt if ‘Bud’ opts to relinquish his world titles.
