The outcome of a fantasy showdown between Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson has been debated for many years.
The legendary duo enjoyed considerable success throughout the course of their respective careers and are often credited for being two of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up the gloves.
Leonard rose to prominence during the 1980’s, winning back the WBC world welterweight title in that historic rematch victory over Roberto Duran in 1980 before going on to capture the undisputed championship at 147lbs when he defeated Thomas Hearns one year later.
Robinson reigned as a world champion on six separate occasions during his tenure, reigning as the world welterweight champion between 1946 and 1951 before he made the move up to middleweight, becoming world champion five times within a 9-year period.
In a round of ‘Knockout’ with the Daily Mail, legendary fighter-turned-promoter Oscar De La Hoya shared his verdict on an intriguing fantasy match-up between Robinson and Leonard.
“I gotta go with Sugar Ray Robinson.”
Robinson’s outstanding legacy lives on to this very day and has inspired many generations of fans and fighters over the years. The late-great American icon fought on over 200 occasions during his career, which spanned for 25-years between 1940 and 1965.
He shared the ring with an abundance of great fighters during this period, including the likes of Randolph Turpin, Carmen Basilio and Jake LaMotta. After a long and brave battle with Alzheimers, Robinson tragically passed away at 67-years-old on April 12 1989.
