Terence Crawford cemented his place in the boxing history books last year alongside the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya.
Already champion at lightweight and undisputed at super-lightweight, the fighter from Omaha captured all four belts in the welterweight division with a statement win over Errol Spence Jr.
Not only does he now top many pound-for-pound lists, but people are comparing him to past eras and wondering how he might fare. Teddy Atlas recently claimed that he would fit nicely in any decade you dropped him in.
Hall of Fame fighter turned promoter De La Hoya was recently asked on the Pound for Pound podcast how ‘Bud’ would perform against another recent American great in 50-0 ‘Money’ Mayweather. He said it was a question of ‘who would’ve gotten frustrated faster.’
“When I saw Crawford and Spence, wow. What a massive performance, you know? And ballsy too. The thing with Mayweather is he’s a master defensive boxer. Master. He knows how to pick his shots and he’ll frustrate you to a point where you’re gonna make mistakes. The questions would’ve been does Crawford get frustrated and make mistakes?
Offensively I think Crawford is better. Throw more punches, combinations, he had a better chance of landing. Mayweather was just a one-two type of puncher. Who knows? It’s a debate … Who would’ve gotten frustrated faster?”
Crawford returns to the ring on August 3 to make his super-welterweight debut against WBA Champion Israil Mardimov.
