Oscar De La Hoya has named the boxing legend that he believes was capable of defeating former pound-for-pound superstar Floyd Mayweather.
Known for his superior defensive qualities, Mayweather is often credited with being one of, if not the greatest fighter to have ever laced up a pair of boxing gloves.
The Michigan-native became a world champion in no less than five weight classes during his decorated career, which began shortly after he captured Bronze at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
‘Money’ Mayweather remained unbeaten in 50 bouts as a professional, defeating the likes of Shane Mosley, Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao before announcing his retirement in 2017.
Another legendary fighter that he got the better of was De La Hoya, who he outpointed in May 2007 to capture the WBC world light-middleweight title in a controversial victory.
A rematch between the pair was touted, and although it never come to fruition, that hasn’t stopped De La Hoya continuing the rivalry with his former foe over the years.
In a feature with MailSport Boxing, ‘The Golden Boy’ made no mistake in backing boxing icon Sugar Ray Leonard to get the better of Mayweather in an intriguing fantasy match-up.

Leonard is widely considered to be one of boxing’s all-time-greats, becoming a five-division world champion during his glittering professional career which spanned between 1976 and 1997.
The bulk of Leonard’s success came during the 1980s where he became a member of the sports ‘Four Kings’ alongside legendary rivals Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and the late, great Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
