There Is Only One Fighter Who Oscar De La Hoya Says Would Beat Him In His Prime

Oscar De La Hoya is seen by many as being one of the greatest fighters of the past 30 years.

De La Hoya claimed a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, and then began what turned out to be an extremely successful professional career.

He captured world titles in six separate divisions, having held gold from super-featherweight all the way to middleweight, becoming the one of the biggest names in the sport in the process.

He shared the ring with fellow icons like Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez, Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins and Pernell Whitaker, as De La Hoya ended his career with a record of 39 wins and just 6 defeats.

‘The Golden Boy’ has now named another fighter who may have added to those losses though, after revealing the name of a fellow legend who he admits would have got the better of him in his prime.

Speaking to Mail Sport Boxing, De La Hoya was asked to predict certain outcomes in a fantasy bracket, and while he felt he would get the better of Thomas Hearns – giving the impression he backs himself against anybody at his best – he then came unstuck with the next man he was put up against.

“Oh man, That’s a good one. I’m going to go with Sugar Ray Robinson.”

Robinson is viewed by many as being the greatest boxer of all time, compiling a remarkable record which at one point stood at 129-1-2, going on a 91-fight unbeaten streak in the process.

His final record read 174 wins, 19 losses, 6 draws and 2 no contests, 109 of those wins coming by knockout, making it clear exactly why so many boxing fans view Robinson as the best ever.
