Promoter Oscar De La Hoya has urged Ryan Garcia to avoid facing one fighter in particular next.

Garcia is currently preparing to make his return to the ring after suffering a major setback in his last career outing.

‘King Ry’ was handed the second defeat of his career when he clashed with Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero at Times Square in New York City on May 2, falling short in his attempt at becoming the WBA Regular welterweight champion.

As he sets his sights on putting a difficult 18 months behind him, Garcia has now been urged by his promoter and legendary fighter De La Hoya to avoid facing just one man in particular when he returns to the ring.

Speaking to DAZN Boxing, De La Hoya admitted that he isn’t interested in putting Garcia into an immediate rematch with ‘Rolly’ next, as he claims there are ‘other big names’ out there for the 26-year-old.

“No, I actually don’t [want to make the rematch] because the first fight was a dull fight and when you’re a promoter and you’re trying to make rematches, it’s because the people wanna see it.

“The first fight wasn’t that entertaining, the first fight wasn’t a big deal so I believe there’s other opponents out there for Ryan. There’s other big names, big fights we can make with the likes of Teofimo and other fighters out there but first thing is first, I need Ryan to be in great health.”

There are still rumours circulating about a potential rematch between Garcia and former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney taking place at some stage in the future.

Garcia defeated Haney in their first encounter that took place in April of 2024, only for the result to be overturned after it was revealed that ‘King Ry’ had failed doping tests prior to the bout.
