The bitter feud between Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya shows no signs of slowing down.
De La Hoya helped to guide the early part of Canelo’s career while he was fighting under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, as the Mexican superstar first became world champion in 2011.
After nearly a decade working together, Alvarez split from De La Hoya and Golden Boy in 2020, with the pair becoming fierce enemies since then.
It turned nasty last year when Canelo went up against Golden Boy fighter Jaime Munguia, leading to Alvarez and De La Hoya having to be separated on stage during the press conference, along with insults traded that led to threats of legal action.
De La Hoya has now named the one fight he urged Canelo not to take while he was still working with the pound-for-pound superstar, telling Club Shay Shay he didn’t want the Floyd Mayweather bout to take place.
“I told Canelo do not fight Floyd because you’re too young and have no experience. He’s 23-years-old flexing his muscles saying ‘I can take on Floyd I’m the very best.’ Guess what, you got schooled. It wasn’t even close.”
Alvarez fought Mayweather back in September 2013, with Mayweather winning the fight on points after a convincing performance, even though the judges had it much closer than what people expected.
Canelo now looks set to meet another undefeated American star later this year, with the clash against Terence Crawford reported to be a done deal for September 2025, and De La Hoya has also offered his prediction for that contest.
