Oscar De La Hoya has had a dig at a fighter he used to promote for showing ‘no loyalty’.

De La Hoya’s relationship with super-middleweight undisputed champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has become strained in recent years.

The two came face-to-face for the first time in years at the press conference the Jaime Munguia fight, who De La Hoya currently promotes, and they had to be separated by security after the Golden Boy boss demanded Canelo put some ‘respect on his name’.

In an interview with ‘The Breakfast Club’ De La Hoya said Canelo’s long list of promoters proves his lack of loyalty.

“I’m very disappointed with the s**t he’s talking, I really am. We were together for 11 years, I built his career, we could easily have derailed his career with the opponents we chose for him. You’re going to tell me that he’s going to talk s**t about me when the man is down. When I was down and out four, five, six years ago he wanted to step on my neck and keep me down and talk shit, what’s wrong with you? I’m a bad guy to him because I don’t like them. What happened to helping me , we’re fighters, we’re here together.

He talks about loyalty, this guy jumps from promoter to promoter to promoter to promoter, what kind of loyalty is that? That’s no loyalty.”

Canelo was guided through the early parts of his career by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions before a bitter split and a string of fights under Matchroom and Eddie Hearn. The Mexican is currently in the middle of a deal with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.
