Deontay Wilder returned to the ring with a low-key win back in June.
That fight against Tyrell Herndon came a year after his last outing, which was a brutal destruction at the fists of Zhilei Zhang, which itself was just six months after Wilder was widely out-pointed by Joseph Parker.
Coupled with two losses to Tyson Fury, those results had left the former WBC champion and fearsome puncher’s career in the balance, but the win means he can now carry on in his pursuit to get back to the top.
One man keen to square off with Wilder is Jarrell Miller. The huge heavyweight is a controversial figure who missed out on a fight with Anthony Joshua in 2019 when he tested positive for a banned substance – something which he has done again since.
He has not fought since a draw with former unified champion Andy Ruiz in August 2024, and his next fight was scheduled for September but was cancelled after Michael Hunter was forced to pull out.
Speaking to Boxing Scene, Miller – who has branded himself the most avoided man in the division due to his inability to land an opponent – explained why there is animosity between him and Wilder and it stems from beef between them and Wilder’s former partner.
“I’ve always had love for Deontay, but like I said, I still want to punch you in the face because you’re a champion. So based on that, that’s the reason why we got beef, because I looked at you as somebody looked up to in the division, but you, in my brain, you kind of like fell off of that championship pedestal because you following a bird.”
A fight between these two has long been mooted but is yet to materialise. Wilder is now being linked with a fight with Joshua, which has been talked about for even longer and would still represent great intrigue for fight fans.
