Deontay Wilder and his coach Malik Scott continue to be talking points while the world awaits to see if the American will return to the ring.
Wilder long reigned as one of the most fearsome punchers in boxing. He held the WBC belt for several years and made plenty of impressive defences, often with brutal knockouts against the likes of Bermaine Stiverne, Dominick Breazeale and Luis Ortiz.
However, a trilogy with Tyson Fury took a lot out of him, particularly the second two fights which he lost by stoppage. Since then he has blown away Robert Helenius in one round but then taken a 12-round points defeat to Joseph Parker and a knockout loss to Zhilei Zhang back in June and has not since returned to the ring.
Now his coach Scott has come under fire from fellow trainer Shane McGuigan who has worked with world champions like Chris Billam-Smith and Lawrence Okolie.
Speaking to Boxing News, he questioned his credentials off the back of Scott, who is now working with Gilberto Ramiez, calling the Mexican’s upcoming unification bout with Billam-Smith a ‘mismatch skill-wise.’
“I don’t know how he’s got a job after the abysmal stuff he’s done with Deontay Wilder. He’s just a guy that talks a load of s**t and all of the s**t he talks never comes to truth.
“He said Deontay Wilder is going to be so much more developed and skilled and he got him shooting to the body with the jab and not using his best attributes and setting up other shots other than his right hand.
“But let’s be real it’s his best shot and his one-two and also snapping that jab out, and he never did any of that in any of the fights. That guy [Scott], he hasn’t trained anybody to win any fight of merit.”
Billam-Smith faces ‘Zurdo’ Ramires tonight in Saudi Arabia.
