Deontay Wilder‘s comeback just got more interesting.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ is looking to bounce back at 39 years of age following back-to-back losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. Though many felt the stoppage defeat to China’s Zhang would spell retirement for the American, he has confirmed he will fight on and is set to announce that officially in the coming days.
The opponent is expected to be heavyweight journeyman Curtis Harper with the fight set for April. It is a clear confidence builder for Wilder, who hasn’t looked his old dangerous self in his past two outings.
While excitement may not be high for a Harper match-up, Turki Alalshikh of Riyadh Season and The Ring Magazine has now told TalkSPORT that he is keen for the knockout artist from Alabama to face one Anthony Joshua.
“If you want something about the British market, I want to see Joshua and Wilder now. If Tyson [Fury] is not available, why not Wilder?”
The fight is well past its sell-by date, having once had the potential to crown an undisputed champion, but many fans will still be intrigued as to the outcome – particularly now because a conclusive defeat would likely spell the end of one career.
Joshua is currently in the market for a comeback bout after being handed his fourth career loss by Daniel Dubois, a brutal knockout at Wembley Stadium last September.
Alalshikh also expressed interest in him facing division dangerman Martin Bakole should he come through an ordered bout with Efe Ajagba, set to be announced soon.
What the Brit’s team really want, however, is the Tyson Fury fight, the man who holds two victories over Wilder and shares two losses with Oleksandr Usyk in common with ‘AJ.’ There has been a spanner thrown in the works in the form of Fury’s recent retirement announcement, though many believe he will u-turn on that in the coming months.
