Derek Chisora has earned the right to pick and choose his next opponent.
The 49-fight heavyweight veteran is enjoying an Indian summer in his campaign, having recently beaten both Joe Joyce and Otto Wallin. Bout number 50 will be his retirement fight by all accounts, and he is taking his time in choosing who will fill the opposite corner.
One man that won’t be is Moses Itauma, or at least that is the current feeling. Speaking to TalkSPORT, Chisora revealed that the fight against the 20-year-old enigma was offered to him and promptly rejected.
“I had a phone call a couple of weeks ago. They offered me to fight Moses Itauma in Saudi. I said how much? They said a couple of million and I said ‘nah, I’m out.’”
It comes down to risk vs reward for Chisora, who is in a healthy position with the IBF and will likely wait until Oleksandr Usyk’s undisputed contest with Daniel Dubois next week before deciding his next move.
The risk, as for many of the top heavyweights, is too much, and ‘Del Boy’ made that clear when predicting the fight Itauma did manage to land against Dillian Whyte.
“This kid is on fire right now. He’s getting better and better. He’s not going backwards, he’s going forward … He’s 20? Jesus Christ. Someone needs to call the police and get them done for attempted murder for making that fight happen.
“That is not the fight to make right now. Moses is on fire, so we need to decide who goes to prison when Dillian gets battered badly. There’s no light at the end of that tunnel.”
