Gervonta Davis shocked boxing fans late last year when he announced that he would be retiring from the sport at the end of 2025. Now, potential future opponent Devin Haney has weighed in.
‘Tank’ Davis has everything is takes to be the biggest star in the sport other than solid activity. He fought just once last year, stopping previously undefeated Frank Martin to retain his WBA Lightweight World Title. The knockout artist from Baltimore will put it on the line again when he faces Lamont Roach Jr on March 1.
At the press conference to make the fight official, Davis announced he would hang up the gloves at the end of this calendar year. If he makes good on the claim, it means many potential fights won’t happen, including that of a fight with two-weight world champion Haney, who has left the lightweight ranks but could welcome ‘Tank’ back up to 140 pounds for the pleasure.
Haney, however, doesn’t buy his rival’s statement, telling assorted media including Seconds Out that the 30-year-old southpaw will fight on.
“He not retiring.”
‘The Dream’ is convinced Davis won’t be able to turn down the big match-ups of this era that are still to be made.
“There’s still a lot of big fights that can be made out there. Tank knows that. I don’t think he’s going to retire with a lot of unfinished business.”
Haney has been out of the ring since his fight with Ryan Garcia, who ‘Tank’ previously knocked out. Garcia missed weight for the bout so was ineligible to win Haney’s WBC World Title, but a deal was struck and the fight went ahead. The champion was knocked down three times on his was to a majority decision loss, however subsequent positive doping tests on Garcia’s part saw it switched to a no contest and him suspended for a year.
Haney, 26, has brought legal action to Garcia and is targeting a March return.
