Devin Haney has seemingly made his mind up on whether or not he will offer Ryan Garcia a rematch.
However, Garcia’s joy was short-lived as just days after the fight VADA reported that the 25-year-old had failed two separate drug tests, the day before and the day of the bout. The Californian fighter has always maintained his innocence and, after the B-samples confirmed the initial test findings, his legal team pointed to contaminated supplements as the likely cause.
Garcia has said he will rematch Haney to prove ‘once again’ he’s the better fighter, but promoter Eddie Hearn, who works closely with Haney, told MillCity Boxing that ‘The Dream’ isn’t in any mood to give Garcia another shot.
“The testing was in place but he failed, so there was nothing wrong with the testing for the fight. What was wrong was that unfortunately he failed the tests on the Friday and the Saturday and you can’t get the result back quick enough, people don’t understand that, it’s not a waste of time because people still get to see, but the aim has always got to be to stop someone who has that in their system entering the ring.
The way Devin feels at the moment, he doesn’t really want the rematch. You’ve got to understand, he took a lot of punishment that night and when you do that and you know someone has that in their body he’s not feeling great about it to be honest and it could have been worse, physically, it could have been worse.”
On what he thinks will happen next, Hearn believes the New York State Athletic Commission will rule the bout a no contest.
“It has to be [a no contest]. Devin wants a disqualification so he gets the victory, I’m on Devin’s side and I see the argument but for me it’s a no contest, it can’t count.”
Garcia was ringside this weekend to watch Gervonta Davis knockout Frank Martin and made it clear the rematch he wants next is against ‘Tank’.
