Former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney has shared his thoughts on the upcoming ‘mega-fight’ between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
‘Bud’ Crawford will make the move up to 168lbs for the first time when he faces the Mexican great, having spent almost the entire duration of his glittering professional career campaigning at welterweight where he became undisputed champion in 2023.
As for Canelo, the 35-year-old from Guadalajara made the move up from middleweight back in 2018 and since then has gone on to become the undisputed champion at 168lbs on two occasions, racking up victories over the likes of Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia and Gennady Golovkin.
Another man that knows about becoming undisputed is Haney, after he achieved that feat at 135lbs with victories over fighters such as Vasily Lomachenko and George Kambosos.
Speaking on Ring Champs with Ak & Barak, Haney shared his thoughts on the upcoming ‘super-fight’ between Canelo and Crawford, admitting that whilst he believes it won’t be easy for his fellow countryman to get the victory against the Mexican, he is still backing him to get the job done.
“I think it’s a good match-up, it’s a fight that we all been wanting to see. Bud has the skills, he got the discipline, IQ to win, but Canelo has all that with the size, so I think it’s a good fight.
“I’m happy that Bud got the fight. My Dad was the one that told him he should take the fight. Bud came out and said that my Dad was the one that told him to fight Canelo a long time ago … It’s here now so, I think it’s a good fight for boxing and I’m picking Bud too, but will it be an easy task? No, but if anybody can do it I think Bud can.”
Victory for the 37-year-old from Omaha would see him become the first male fighter in boxing history to capture an undisputed championship in three weight classes, writing his name into the boxing history books once again in the process.
