Dillian Whyte had a disastrous night on Saturday when he took on Moses Itauma in Saudi Arabia.
Whyte had fought just twice in three years ahead of this contest. He came into it looking in terrific shape, but 20-year-old Itauma was razor sharp from the off.
While Whyte missed with his jabs, Ituama picked him off with counters and landed a big shot on his temple that had him wobbling. He followed up with further hooks and before the end for the second minute of the fight he had him face down on the canvas.
Though Whyte beat the count, he was on unsteady feet and the ref had no choice but to stop the fight.
Speaking to Seconds Out, Whyte’s trainer, Buddy McGirt, revealed that Whyte apologised to him for his performance after the fight.
“He’s good, his spirits are good. He was down for a bit last night, but now he’s getting better.
He’s apologised. I’m like, there’s nothing to apologise for, this is the game we’re in, it happens sometimes. This is the sport we’re in. You stepped in the ring, you did what you had to do, it went the way it went, but you don’t owe anyone an apology.
He steps up to the plate, he takes on anybody, nobody wanted to fight Moses, he stepped up. Nobody has the mentality of Dillian.”
He then put the loss down to the first big shot that landed on the top of his head and scrambled his senses.
“He did have an injury a couple of weeks ago but he said he was going to go through with the fight. Everything was good until he got hit with that shot, he didn’t recover quick enough.”
Whyte has said he will go away and consider his options before deciding what’s next, while Itauma is only looking up and he continues to be linked to a fight with Oleksandr Usyk.
