Buster Douglas has shockingly overlooked Mike Tyson when revealing the hardest puncher that he ever crossed paths with.
Douglas is perhaps best known for producing one of , if not the biggest upset in boxing history back in 1990 when he defeated Tyson at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.
The Ohio-native stopped ‘Iron Mike’ in the tenth round to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion, handing Tyson the first defeat of his professional career in the process.
Douglas was dethroned of his heavyweight titles just one fight later however, suffering a stoppage defeat in the third round of his showdown with Evander Holyfield in October of 1990.
In a resurfaced interview with Boxing Insider, Douglas gave an honest answer when asked to reveal the hardest punchers that he ever shared the ring with.
“Early in my career, facing guys on the way up like myself. The hard times of driving somewhere, where the odds are against you every fight, made me a better man. That’s how my dad (Bill, former top middleweight in the 1960’s-70’s) did it, too. On the road. Later on they were cream puffs. They had easy opponents, never left home. They had it easy, I came up the hard way.”
Douglas called time on his career after he was beaten by Holyfield, although he would make a return to the sport six years later where he would suffer just one defeat in ten bouts before he entered retirement for the second time in 1999.
