Daniel Dubois was a keen observer when Tyson Fury took on Oleksandr Usyk at the end of December 2024.
This fight was a rematch of the undisputed contest between the two best men in the heavyweight division. Both were unbeaten at the time of the first encounter and it was a suitably close contest that was just edged by the Ukrainian who became the four belt ruler, repeating the same feat that he achieved down at cruiserweight in 2018.
The rematch in Saudi Arabia was another close fight but ultimately Usyk won it via a unanimous decision with all three judges scoring it 116-112 in his favour.
He was the fighter who managed to land more clean shots and apply pressure throughout. He is now considered by many to be one of the best fighters of all time after inflicting a second straight defeat on ‘The Gypsy King’ having previously scored the double over Anthony Joshua.
Speaking to BoxNation, Dubois has revealed who he thinks should have won the fight.
“I thought it was a close fight. [Usyk] edged it though on the last couple of rounds. It was a close fight between two top guys, but I think he edged it.”
Dubois picked up the IBF belt vacated by Usyk in mid 2024 and will next defend it against Joseph Parker on February 22 as part of a huge card. He stormed the ring following Usyk’s latest win and called him out, looking to avenge the stoppage loss he suffered in August 2023.
Should he beat Parker, the pressure will ramp up for the pair to go at it again for a second undisputed fight in a little over a year.
