Daniel Dubois now holds a world heavyweight title and is being chased not only by current contenders, but retired champions like Wladimir Klitschko.
The young Brit will be taking on Joseph Parker on February 22. Parker, a former WBO champion, has had some of the best wins of his career recently over American puncher Deontay Wilder and huge Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang.
Dubois claimed a sensational knockout of Anthony Joshua back in September which confirmed his status as IBF king after he was elevated to full champion following his win over Fillip Hrgovic back in June. Just six months before that, he became the first man to stop Jarrell Miller.
Despite having his hands full with Parker, Dubois was recently asked by Sky Sports if he would entertain a fight with former long-time heavyweight ruler Klitschko following reports talks had started but broken down.
“Yeah, let’s fight.”
Elaborating, the 27-year-old said that anything was possible if the terms are right.
“This is that era now where anything can happen in boxing. I think there was a bit of talk about that before but he obviously didn’t fancy it. ‘Do I want Daniel on my case? This young lion hunting me down, nah’.
Guys like that can come out of retirement. Look Mike Tyson had an exhibition fight the other day. It’s all to play for. It’s good. If all the terms are right then, yeah, let’s fight.”
Klitschko, who beat the likes of David Haye and Alexandr Povetkin but lost to Tyson Fury and never had a rematch, has long had the ambition of breaking George Foreman‘s record as the oldest ever man to win a heavyweight world title when he was 45. A victory against Dubois now that he is aged 48 would certainly accomplish that.
