Panamanian great Roberto Duran has summed up Canelo Alvarez‘s performance in his historic showdown with Terence Crawford back in September.

The Mexican great suffered the third defeat of his professional career to ‘Bud’ in Las Vegas on September 13, surrendering his undisputed super-middleweight championship in the process.

Despite stepping up in two weight classes, Crawford put on arguably the best display of his career against Canelo to become the first male three-weight undisputed world champion in boxing history.

While the dust may have now settled following the mega-clash, the legendary Roberto Duran has now shared his thoughts on Canelo’s performance against the unbeaten American in footage shared by Izquierdazobox.

“Well, honestly, I saw him doing poorly. I saw him doing poorly because I thought Canelo was going to use more intelligence in his boxing. But it seems that when they boxed him, he didn’t know what to do. So he still needs more.”

Duran went on to reveal what he believes Canelo could do differently ahead of a potential rematch with Crawford.

“What he should do now is spar with bigger gloves, so he can learn more about how to get in, how to get out, how to punch, and how to cut off the ring. That’s what he was missing, because in my opinion his trainer didn’t teach him anything.”

It was reported earlier this week that Canelo is looking to secure a rematch with Crawford next, with trainer Eddy Reynoso revealing that September 2026 is their targeted date for when they would like it to happen.
