Roberto Duran Didn’t Hesitate When Asked If Floyd Mayweather Could Beat Leonard, Hagler Or Hearns

Boxing legend Roberto Duran has shared his thoughts on the credentials of Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest fighter to have ever laced up the gloves.

He remained unbeaten throughout the entirety of his professional career, defeating all 50 of the opponents he faced including the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya.

Mayweather captured world titles in five weight divisions during his tenure, ranging from super-featherweight to light-middleweight. He announced his retirement from the sport in 2017, just a few months after he beat MMA fighter Conor McGregor in their crossover bout in Las Vegas.

Despite his technical brilliance, Panamanian icon Duran has had his say on how he believes Mayweather would have fared if he was active during the 1980s, which included fighters such as himself, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, who were collectively known as ‘The Four Kings’.

In an interview, Duran admitted that he believes Mayweather would not have been such a ‘big name’ during that golden generation of boxing.

“I laugh when Floyd Mayweather says that if he went back in time he would beat us all. I’ll tell you this: if he was in the same era as Hagler and Hearns and Leonard and me, I don’t think he would be such a big name. There is too much talk.”

Duran’s influence on the sport remains a topic of conversation within the boxing community to this very day, proving himself to be one of the greatest fighters to have ever graced the sport throughout his storied career.
