Roberto Duran has had his say on a fantasy fight between Floyd Mayweather and Sugar Ray Robinson.
Duran is undeniably one of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up the gloves. Throughout the course of his 33 year career, the Panamanian great won world titles in four weight classes including the undisputed championship at lightweight.
The bulk of his success came during the 1980s, where he competed alongside the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns. These four legendary fighters dominated the sport during this era, earning themselves the right to be called ‘The Four Kings’.
After drawing the curtain on his career in 2001, Duran has kept a close eye on some the sport’s highest rated fighters over the years, including Mayweather, who retired from boxing back in 2017 with an unblemished professional record.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Duran was asked who he believes would have prevailed in a fantasy fight between Mayweather and the late-great Sugar Ray Robinson.
“Sugar Ray Robinson, he’s the best! Sugar Ray Robinson is the best!”
Robinson is often regarded as being the greatest fighter of all time by fans and historians alike. He fought over 200 times during his professional career, capturing a version of the world title on six occasions throughout.
He is known for memorable battles with Jake LaMotta, Henry Armstrong and Rocky Graziano amongst others. Robinson passed away at the age of 67 following a brave battle with Parkinson’s Disease, although his incredible legacy lives on in the present day.
