Eddie Hearn has named a number of potential opponents for Jaron Ennis after a showdown with Vergil Ortiz Jr was dealt a huge blow.
‘Boots’ Ennis and Ortiz have been on a collision course to finally lock horns this year, although it remains to be seen whether the unbeaten American duo will actually end up sharing a ring in 2026.
Ennis was last in action back in October when he stopped Uisma Lima in the opening round of their showdown in Philadelphia to capture the vacant WBA ‘interim’ super-welterweight title.
As for Ortiz, the 27-year-old from Texas extended his unbeaten record to 24-0 back in November when he made the second defence of his WBC ‘interim’ super-welterweight title with a 2nd round stoppage win over Erickson Lubin in Fort Worth.
Speaking to Fight Hub, promoter Eddie Hearn named a number of potential future opponents for ‘Boots’, should a planned clash with Ortiz fail to come to fruition.
“You know, we are looking at other options for Jaron Ennis and obviously we have Josh Kelly fighting Murtazaliev next week. Josh Kelly has already signed to fight Boots, you know, if he wins which would be amazing and a big win for British boxing.
“We also have Xander Zayas fighting next week, we’d love to make that fight with Top Rank. I think that’d be a huge fight. Charlo talks a good game, whether he’d actually take a fight with Boots, who knows? But for me, Vergil and Boots are the number one and number two in the division, so that’s really what we want to do and we’ll see if we can over the coming weeks.”
