Eddie Hearn Delivers Honest Verdict On Carl Froch vs Joe Calzaghe: “I Can’t Back Against Him”

Eddie Hearn has waded into the debate about a fantasy fight between Carl Froch and Joe Calzaghe.

Froch and Calzaghe are two of the best super middleweights Britain has ever produced. Their careers briefly overlapped for a time, though towards the end of his time in boxing, Calzaghe moved up to light heavyweight.

He took part in fights with Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr at 175lbs, both of which he won to retire undefeated after 46 contests. He is the longest ever reigning super-middleweight world champion, having defended the belt for more than a decade against 20 opponents.

Froch held multiple titles while competing between 2002 and 2014, including the WBC, WBA and IBF belts. He was known for his granite chin and refusal to back down, while Calzaghe was a volume puncher with slicker footwork and defences.

Froch bowed out with a pair of victories over George Groves, but often talks of the fight that got away against the Welshman. With that in mind, his former promoter Hearn has been speaking to BoxNation, where he had plenty of praise for ‘The Cobra’ and picked him to come out on top had the pair fought.

“I would never back against Carl because he was the most stubborn, tightest b**tard. I love Carl Froch. I tell you something now, he would scrap with you for a five-penny piece on the floor.”

Froch’s former promoter then admitted that Calzaghe would have presented a different challenge for his man than many.

“Terrible style for Carl.”

Calzaghe’s promoter Frank Warren, of course, strongly believes his former charge would have got the job done.
