In a matter of weeks Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk reignite one of the most thrilling and technical heavyweight rivalries of the modern era.
Ukraine’s Usyk came out on top via split decision when the pair first met back in May, wobbling the Brit on his way to becoming undisputed champion.
‘The Gypsy King’ would activate his rematch clause immediately. Speaking to IFL TV, at the launch press conference, promoter Eddie Hearn said the big man from Morecambe was the underdog and his money would ‘always’ be on Usyk.
“I have no idea how to beat [Usyk], but Tyson Fury is a very smart fighter. He has smart people in the corner, but also, from an IQ level in boxing, he’s right up there. Unfortunately, so is Oleksandr Usyk. So, my money, especially when he’s won the first fight, will always be on Oleksandr Usyk.
“My heart wants to see a Tyson Fury win. Not just because he’s British but also because I want to set up the AJ fight. I’d love to see him do it, but I do see him as the underdog in this fight.”
In a more recent interview with the same outlet, the promoter has now revealed he leans towards ‘The Gypsy King’ to win.
“If Fury wins – and I’m actually leaning towards him, I’ve had a little bit of a [switch] – Fury could fight AJ for the unified world heavyweight title. The biggest fight ever in the sport. Wembley, Riyadh, wherever.”
The rematch takes place on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Watching closely will be Hearn and Anthony Joshua, who the promoter wants to put in with Fury whether he wins or loses.
