Gervonta Davis is looking for a dance partner after handing Frank Martin the first loss of his career.
With fans demanding activity and ‘Tank’ as popular as ever, his team looked to build on the momentum by entering talks to put their WBA Lightweight World Title on the line against Vasiliy Lomachenko‘s IBF belt.
After positive initial talks, the Ukrainian backed out due to a lack of motivation. It seems that the more sought-after fight against Shakur Stevenson will also be left to marinate for a little longer.
In a clip shared by Mill City Boxing, promoter Eddie Hearn – who is in the race to sign Stevenson – said he guesses ‘Tank’ will rematch one Isaac Cruz next.
“Yeah, I think if the deal’s not right and he’s not really up for it Lomachenko’s the kind of guy that’ll just go nah, leave it. So he’s decided to leave it. It’s going to be interesting to see what Tank does next – I guess he’ll fight the winner of Pitbull against Rayo this Saturday but we’ll see.”
‘Pitbull’ Cruz is only one of two men to take Davis the distance. The fight, back in 2021, was a unanimous decision win for the Baltimore puncher to keep hold of his WBA Regular Lightweight Title.
Cruz, who has since moved up to super-lightweight and won the WBA belt there, was the first man to go twelve with ‘Tank’ in seven years and has long since called for the rematch.
This weekend in Los Angeles he faces a tough test in Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela, the rangey 25-year-old southpaw who looks to halt Cruz in his tracks and take the belt in his debut at 140.
‘Pitbull’s manager, Sean Gibbons, recently told Boxing Scene that December would be ‘perfect’ for the second Davis fight.
