Earlier this month, Terence Crawford became a four-weight world champion. He now wants to make that five.
The 36-year-old switch hitter from Omaha is one of only three men to become undisputed in two divisions in the four belt era. He is undefeated in 41 and has headlined two huge cards in his last two outings.
He has been clear that there’s not much left for him to achieve in the sport other than another weight jump to face unified super-middleweight world champion Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez, who defends his belts against Edgar Berlanga next month.
Speaking to ES News, former Canelo promoter Eddie Hearn said that he doesn’t think Crawford will take the Fundora fight and that he will retire should he fail to land Canelo.
“It doesn’t look like [he will get the Canelo fight] at the moment. I don’t think Crawford will fight again outside of Canelo Alvarez. I don’t think he has the desire. He definitely won’t fight Vergil Ortiz in my opinion, I don’t think he’ll fight Fundora. He made a lot of money last time out, he made a lot of money against Spence and I think he’s thinking if I don’t make a lot of money I’m done.”
Crawford himself has admitted that retirement is an option and his coach Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre said that he could see it happening as there was nothing else left to accomplish in the sport.
All eyes now turn to September 14 when Canelo faces Berlanga. The Mexican has made it clear that he will listen to offers thereafter. Whether Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh will meet his financial demands for the fight remains the be seen.
